World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

Here in the village of Minova, in Eastern DRC, WFP and its partner NRC have organized a distribution of food vouchers for people displaced by fighting.

Here’s Maniraguna Zawadi. She was forced to flee her home 3 months ago with her husband and three children.  She’s queuing up for her vouchers with other displaced people.

Maniraguna now has her vouchers. They’re worth $17.50 and should enable her to buy enough food for her family for a month.

Maniraguna has met up with her husband and now they can go shopping together, to spend the vouchers at the special ‘food fair’ which has been set up by local food traders.

After looking at a few stalls, Maniraguna and her husband decide that their first purchase will be a sack of maize flour.

There’s a range of foods on sale at the food fair, including dried fish. Maniraguna knows this is nutritious so she buys some for her family.

Maniraguna is especially pleased to be able to buy a kilo of sugar. She hasn’t had that for several months.

Salt, oil and lentils are also in the shopping bag. Fresh fruit and vegetables can be bought day by day with the few coins that Maniraguna and her husband manage to earn by doing odd jobs.

On their way back to the village where Maniraguna and her family are now living with a host family- a family who offered them hospitality after they fled fighting.
