World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

US philanthropist Howard G. Buffett checks out WFP food distributions to displaced people around Goma. A longtime visitor to eastern DRC, Buffett has supported a raft of environmental and development projects in the region. "It's incredibly important to get people home," he says of the tens of thousands of people displaced by the latest flareup of violence.

Buffett shared a light moment as he toured WFP food distributions at Mugunga I, one of several camps for displaced people outside Goma.

WFP rations are calculated to meet the needs of a family of five.

Buffett takes time to snap pictures and share a laugh with children sheltered at Don Bosco, a Catholic institution in Goma that offered refuge to thousands of displaced people.

Some of North Kivu's displaced are going home. Hundreds headed back to their farms after seeking refuge at Don Bosco. The Howard G. Buffett foundation donated $1 million to WFP to help returnees get back on their feet.

Venasia Niramariro, a 55-year-old mother of two, is among those going home. There's not much to greet her. Armed men burned down her house and stole all her crops.
