Salvadoran government representatives and the heads of four UN Agencies (WFP, PAHO/WHO, UNDP and UNICEF) approved on 26 June 2013 the final report of the Joint Programme on Children, Food Security and Nutrition, which was financed by the Millennium Development Goals Achievement Fund (MDG-F) thanks to the support of the Government of Spain.
SAN SALVADOR - The Joint Programme on Children, Food Security and Nutrition, financed by the Spanish MDG Fund, sought to contribute to the achievement of MDG 1 through the two objectives. The first was to strengthen the institutional capacities of El Salvador’s National Council on Food Security and Nutrition, known by its Spanish acronym as CONASAN. This would allow CONASAN to coordinate and integrate multi sector activities at national and local levels as part of a national plan for the implementation of the country’s Policy on Food Security and Nutrition approved by President Mauricio Funes on 16 May 2011.
The second objective of the programme was to improve the food security and nutrition of children under 3, and of lactating and pregnant women in the municipalities of Guatajiagua, Cacaopera and San Simon in the northeastern province of Morazán through the implementation of a multi sector strategy that included educational, productive, health and basic sanitation activities.
The role of WFP in the joint programme was to facilitate awareness and training on food security and nutrition for 100 decision makers at the national and local levels, and to promote good food and nutrition practices in 58 public schools.
The highlight of WFP's support lies on the design and implementation of the National Information and Monitoring System on Food Security and Nutrition through CONASAN. This system provides the Government of El Salvador with the institutional capacity to make well-informed and timely decisions on health, food and nutrition policies with the aim of improving the food security and nutrition of the most vulnerable Salvadorans.
