Villages like this are giving hope to people in Ethiopia

A joint venture between WFP and the Ethiopian government is enabling chronically food-insecure communities to rehabilitate the environment and generate sustainable income that improves livelihoods.

Ethiopian women are key to eradicating hunger

When WFP empowers women, the results are stunning.  In Ethiopia, women are learning agricultural practices that give them both food and income security.  With the extra food they grow, they're able to buy household goods and provide for their children.

Access to water is critical

Without access to clean water, women aren't able to grow the crops they desperately need to feed their families and strengthen their communities.  By simply building the facilities to hold water, WFP is creating a solution that will last.

Water can change everything

Access to clean water not only enables women to grow crops, it also reduces exposure to disease and infection.

Cooking a meal

Cooking a meal may seem an ordinary task. But for many women in Ethiopia, being able to cook a meal for their families can inspire a smile like this.

Sustainable income changes women's lives

With surpluss crops and roads built to connect villages, women can access the market place and create income for themselves and their families.  This not only provides them with a sense of pride, it lets them build better homes and invest in their children's education.

A child's smile

A child's smile is worth all of the energy put into these projects.  The hope, laughter and joy of childhood resonates clearly when they have access to clean water, food and education.

Education that makes a difference

When children are able to learn to read and write they gain the ability to escape from the cycle of hunger.  And, with school meals provided by WFP there's an even greater incentive for parents to send their children to school.
