World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

Brazilian Ambassador H.E Isabel Cristina de Azevedo Heyvaert talks to Shankadha Aden, 33, a Somali refugee who received Brazilian rice this month. A mother of six, she fled Somalia 10 months ago. "I am very proud that Brazilian rice arrived here to help Somali refugees", Ambassador de Azevedo Heuvaert says.

Every month, refugees receive 4 kg of rice as part of the food basket, which includes also wheat, pulses, enriched blended food, oil, sugar and salt. The distribution of Brazilian rice started in July 2012 and will continue until the end of the year.

Brazil has become WFP's 9th largest donor this year. WFP Ethiopia was fortunate to receive an in-kind rice donation from Brazil which allowed us to diversify the food basket available to refugees.

 Somali refugees in Buramino camp, Dolo Ado. The total refugee population in Ethiopia has reached more than 372,000 people by end of Auugust. Refugees from Somalia are the largest group, representing more than 60% of the total refugee population in Ethiopia.

WFP provides blanket and supplementary targeted feeding to all children under five, along with pregnant and lactating women at Dolo Ado refugee camp.

Ambassador de Azevedo Hayvaert helps to distribute Brazilian rice to refugees. WFP places priority in distributing food to women to ensure that it reaches all family members. Rice was added to refugees' rations, in line with nutritional objectives and in response to refugees' expressed preference for it.

Buramino refugee camp in Dolo Ado. The camp opened in November 2011 and now hosts 31,000 refugees. WFP provides food assistance to 170,000 Somali refugees in the Dolo Ado camps in close coordination with the Governement of Ethiopia's Administration for Refugees and Returnee Affairs (ARRA) and UNHCR. To accomodate the influx of refugees, UNHCR is building a sixth camp in Dolo Ado.
