Food security and school feeding initiatives launched in The Gambia
The Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, the EU Chargée d'Affaires, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, as well as, representatives of FAO and WFP jointly launch the MDG Initiative in Pakaliba, Lower River Region. It lays the foundation for a sustainable home grown school feeding programme that will provide smallholder farmers a structured and predictable demand for their produce.

The ceremony, which was chaired by the Governor (in the picture), took place in Lower River Region, a conscious decision of the Government and partners to bring the project closer to the beneficiaries and to encourage community participation.

Agnes Guillaud, the EU Chargée d'Affaires highlighted the fact that agriculture has the potential to contribute significantly to the attainment of the MDGs in The Gambia. The European Union is grateful to FAO and WFP for their joint support in efforts to boost the agricultural sector to reduce hunger and poverty.

Successful implementation of the MDG project depends on community participation, support and dedication. Food security is not an absence of hunger; it is the ability of a nation to manage it.
