World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

On 5 June, WFP Ghana held an award ceremony in Northern Region for its girls scholarship scheme. Since 2001, when the scheme started, more than 200 girls have received scholarships from WFP to complete secondary school. 

Deputy Minister for Women and Children's Affairs Hajia Hawawu Boya Gariba makes a speech about the Government's commitment to girls education. Girls on the scholarship scheme are selected based on their performance on national school examinations.

Deputy Director General of the Ghana Education Service Charles Aheto-Tsegah congratulates a scholarship beneficiary. The scheme is supported by the WFP Gender Innovation Fund. 

Gladys Sampson represents a private sector company that funded 10 girls' scholarships.  The scholarships are awarded to girls who previously received WFP rations in primary school but are unable to fund secondary education.  

Veronica Johnson, the national activity coordinator of the Ghana Education Service, hands a certificate and prize to a girl on the scholarship programme. 

 Imoro Zainab, in the centre, is a former student of Tuvugu Junior High School, a school that receives WFP take-home rations.

 A group of the beneficiary girls at the scholarship ceremony. An impact evaluation conducted in 2011 showed that 95 percent of girls who received scholarships between 2001 and 2010 were either in secondary school, tertiary institutions, or working after having completed school.
