World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

By 24 October, a total of 673 metric tons of food have been distributed to the country's most affected communities. These are some graphic examples of the work taking place in the towns of the southern Pacific coast.

Emergency rations include corn, beans and vegetable oil.

Families of the Department of Escuintla were strongly affected due to river flooding.

Marta Lidia is a 48-year-old community leader. "In some cases the water was up to the waist, but  we are supporting the community."

The rations given to each family in an emergency have been calculated in order to ensure foods for 20 days.

Maize is fundamental in the Guatemalan diet. In many cases, it is a crop of survival. After the rains, families who were unable to harvest lost the grain that guaranteed their backup for the next 6 months.

The strict control over the delivery of rations is another job that field monitors have to do during the distributions.

The coast-kids do not lose their smile and good humor in spite of the inconveniences caused by the rain.
