World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

The World Food Programme is thankful to the Government of Brazil's for its support to the Emergency and Recovery Operation in Guatemala which will feed 150,00 people.

"This donation of beans and rice is one of the ways in which Brazil contributes to Guatemala´s fight against hunger and food insecurity," said Ambassador of Brazil, José Roberto de Almeida Pinto.

Guatemala government representatives, local authorities and partners participated in the event that took place in Puerto Santo Tomas de Castilla.

In the community of Mojanales, Puerto Barrios, WFP provides assistance to 38 families severely affected by Tropical Storm 12E in October 2011.

This donation will be distributed to vulnerable families, right in the period of the year when it is most needed," said Guy Gauvreau, WFP Country Director in Guatemala.

Brazil's Ambassador visits the school in the community Mojanales which has been destroyed several times due to the floods caused by heavy rains in recent years.

Esther Consuelo Lorenzo Ramirez, widow (52) takes care of her two children Daniel (10) and Sandra (7) and her mother (78) whose hearing is impaired. In order to bring food home Consuelo sales “tortillas”, raises chickens and washes clothes. This is the second time this family is assisted by WFP.

Assistance will be provided to families who lost their crops work through food-for-asset programmes, in emergency preparedness and capacity building at community level in 20 departments of the country. WFP has also provided training for sanitation in homes and community as well as good hygiene practices, planting gardens and building organic composting.
 

To reach the community Mojanales is necessary to cross the Motagua River which causes severe damages along its banks during the rainy season in the country.
