To support families in the area known as “dry corridor” and “extended dry corridor”, the governments of Brazil and Spain joined efforts and delivered 456 tons of Brazilian rice to the Government of Guatemala through the World Food Programme (WFP).

“In regards to humanitarian cooperation, Brazil has consistently supported Guatemala with different ways of donations to cope with natural disasters and the fight against undernutrition. During the government of President Dilma Rousseff and the management of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Patriota we added in-kind food donations, through the WFP. This donation joint with previous ones, adds up to more than 3,200 tons,” says Jose Roberto De Almeida Pinto, Brazilian Ambassador in Guatemala.

“Today’s act it is a clear example of a twinning modality in which three Latin American countries: Guatemala, Spain and Brazil, coordinated by an UN Agency like WFP, achieve an impact, that unilaterally would not have been possible,” says Manuel Lejarreta Lobo, Spanish Ambassador in Guatemala.

"WFP is grateful to have the support and backing of Brazil and Spain, and also the Guatemalan government with whom we work shoulder to shoulder ... It is important to note that in addition to this donation, purchases of corn and beans have been made to local smallholders strengthening the local market," says Guy Gauvreau WFP Representative in Guatemala.

"We appreciate the support of the international community. This contribution from Brazil and Spain adds to the more than 5,000 MT of food already stored in warehouses throughout the country and will assist families facing hunger due to weather conditions and food insecurity,” says Elmer López, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food.
