WFP Ambassador Christina Aguilera Visited Haiti in May to meet with children who'd lost their homes and loved ones in the earthquake. While there, she helped serve them the rice and beans they receive as part of WFP's school meals programmes. "I was so moved by the devastation in Haiti, but also by the spirit of its people," said the world-famous singer.

By this summer, a semblance of normality had returned to the streets of Port-au-Prince as vendors reappeared selling food and people set about the task of rebuilding their homes.

Moving from emergency food-assistance to a longer term food-security strategy, WFP launched "food for work" and "cash for work" schemes that provided for people's basic needs in return for their help clearing debris and rebuilding the country.

Many of these "food and cash for work" projects took place in rural Haiti to repair the damage there and help local farmers grow food to feed the country.

By the close of 2010, many of the participants in these programmes were earning cash instead of food so that they could buy their necessities on local markets and help restart Haiti's economy.
