World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

In the town of Marigot, located east of Jacmel and some 40 kms from Port au Prince, the waters of the Felse River flooded the town’s streets.

Several days after the floods, the destruction caused is still visible in Marigot. Hurricane Sandy arrived on the heels of a severe drought and Tropical Storm Isaac in August.

It will take a long time for families in Haiti to clean up the wreckage caused by Hurricane Sandy.

The three extreme weather events have pushed the numbers of food insecure people in Haiti to 1.5 million, including many pregnant and nursing women, and young children.

Kristene Armand, 58-year-old, stands in front of the site where operated a small mill which served nearby maize producers. The income he earned helped him sustain his wife and son.

Unfortunately the Felse River heavily damaged his shop and also destroyed the small farmers crops.

Small children, like Stechina Alexis, are the most vulnerable in the aftermath of natural disasters.

It's important to reach new mothers and small children with the nutrition they need in the aftermath of a disaster to prevent them from being malnourished.

The floods also devastated local infrastructure, like this canal for irrigation that local farmers relied on to water their crops.

As part of a UN Flash Appeal, WFP is requesting more than USD20 million to fund emergency food distributions to some 100,000 affected Haitians, to provide supplementary feeding and nutritional support to more than 100,000 children below 5 year of age, pregnant women and new mothers in the worst affected departments.

But getting to the beneficiaries and delivering food is full of challenges as seen in this landslide in the road between the community of Vallé du Jacmel and Benet, Sud Est Department.
