Ricardo Alvarez, Mayor of Tegucigalpa the capital of Honduras, and the Municipal Corporation, gave the name Plaza WFP to a circle that begins one of the main avenues of the city, the Boulevard Morazán, in recognition for humanitarian work of the World Food Programme (WFP).
"On behalf of the City Council I would like to make a formal presentation to WFP and initiative Square Zero Hunger this will help us all to remember that we can all give a little to fight hunger in our country," said Mayor Richard Alvarez.
WFP Representative in Honduras, Miguel Barreto, thanked the mayor for the City's recognition. He emphasized that this distinction to WFP is also recognition to the thousands of people of Tegucigalpa who each year show their solidarity to those suffering from hunger and undernutrition by participating in the Zero Hunger Walk, which will take place this year on Sunda, 3 June 2012. Barreto also stressed WFP's commitment "to work with all stakeholders, the city, the government and civil society in sustainable strategies until hunger and undernutrition is eradicated in Honduras as well as in the rest of the world."
WFP has been working for more than 40 years with the Government of Honduras in food assistance programmes aimed at promoting education, health and rural development for the most vulnerable groups of the country.
