World Food Programme (WFP) staff recently travelled to the Garifuna community of Sambo Creek to visit the La Libertad School, whose students benefit from the School Meals Programme. This programme is the result of an strategic alliance between the Government of Honduras and WFP.

This youngster on Fourth Grade at La Libertad School enjoys a meal of rice and beans. The Garifunas of Sambo Creek are among the poorest communities in the Atlantic coast of Honduras.

Some 486 children studying in La Libertad School receive a hot meal every day. The Garifunas arrived in Honduras from the Lesser Antilles more than 200 years ago. They also settled in Guatemala, Belize and Nicaragua.

For these children, this is the best time of the day. Sambo Creek is located in the Municipality of La Ceiba, Departament of Atlántida, some 400 kilometers from the capital city of Tegucigalpa.

The Garifunas are descendants of Africans, Caribs and Arawaks. In 2001 UNESCO proclaimed their language, dance and music as part of the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
