WFP enjoys a long-standing and excellent relationship with the Government of India's Ministry of Agriculture and Co-operation - WFP's nodal ministry in the country for nearly 50 years. WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin and Minister Sharad Pawar, discussed how to improve the nutrition situation in India.

Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Professor Thomas, briefed WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin on the country's progress under the National Food Security Act and commended WFP for its commitment to developing the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) Best Practice Model, which improves efficiency and effectiveness of the national food-based social safety net.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Co-operation and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry facilitated an exchange between the vibrant Indian private sector and WFP's Executive Director to explore venues of public-private sector engagement in the country.
Roundtable consultations on the ramifications of the recently passed rights-based National Food Security Act brought together international organisations, research institutions and government representatives. Professor Swaminathan (in photo) and his research foundation has been a highly valued partner of WFP in India for more than a decade.
WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin met with members of the United Nations Country Team to strengthen collaboration among UN agencies in India, where the complexity of underlying causes of hunger and malnutrition require a comprehensive and coordinated approach.

Headed by Edward Kallon, the Country Office is working on a new Country Strategy for 2014 - 2017 to reflect India's new profile as a middle-income country and to be in line with the priorities of the Government of India.
