World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the Municipal Government of Kota Jayapura, represented by Peter Guest, WFP Indonesia Deputy Country Director (right) and Drs Benhur Tommy Mano, MM, Jayapura Mayor (left), respectively, signed an agreement to pilot a local school meals programme in Muara Tami, in Indonesia’s eastern Papua province.

Through this programme, WFP will serve 10 schools in Muara Tami sub-district until June 2013, where nearly 1,700 students will receive nutritious hot meals (Bubur Tami and Bubur Bum) three times a week, made from local foods such as cassava, sweet potato and pumpkin. 

Fourth graders Nia, Dian and Yusnianty enjoy spending their lunch time together eating WFP's school meals.  The three of them grew up in Koya Tengah sub-village in Muara Tami sub-district, Jayapura City in Papua. Their parents came from Java and have been living in Papua since 1983.

An important aspect of the School Meals Programme is engaging the local community.  By collaborating with WFP, teachers and parents become aware of the importance of preparing nutritious meals for the students.
