World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

WFP has partnered with local NGOs to deliver food commodities using boats, called “pinasses”, to vulnerable communities located along the river Niger.  Waterways offer a more secure means of transportation to areas in the north of the country where the political and security situation remains volatile.  

Pinasses can load up to 20 metric tons of food and spend between 4 and 5 days to cover the 400km distance between Mopti, in central Mali, and Timbuktu.  

To date WFP has delivered food and nutritional commodities to more than 50,000 people in Timbuktu, Gao and Kidal regions.

The arrival of food is a cause for celebration in Timbuktu, northern Mali.  4.6 million people are estimated to be at risk of food insecurity due to the ongoing food and nutritional crisis, and conflict.

WFP food assistance is unloaded from a convoy of trucks.  In cooperation with local NGO partners, WFP has been providing assistance to internally displaced persons in Mopti and Segou

Once all food has been unloaded, children climb into the truck and sweep up leftover grains to ensure that no food goes to waste.
