Students of Shivabhawani Primary School line up to welcome a joint delegation of representatives from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Ministry of Education, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Bajhang district in far-western Nepal. Last month, the delegation visited various schools in the remote villages of far-western region to observe activities under the School Meals Programme.
Head of the USDA McGovern-Dole mission, Mary Allen, inaugurates the Kalika Bhagawati Primary School in Bajhang district. USDA has made an annual contribution of six million US dollars for three years (2011-2013) through McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Programme to WFP Nepal.
Mary Allen inaugurates the new building of Kalika Bhagawati Primary School. The building was constructed in joint collaboration between WFP and GIZ under the McGovern-Dole funded School Support Programme. WFP is supporting activities such as the construction of school building and compound walls, ground-levelling, the use of smokeless cooking stoves and the upgrading of paths children take to walk to school in remote villages. The projects are designed to improved school infrastructure and create a more conducive learning environment for the schoolchildren.
Mary Allen inspects a newly constructed school kitchen at Kalika Bhagawati Primary School. In addition to in-kind donation of food, USDA also provides financial assistance for complementary activities like infrastructure improvement of schools, kitchens and food storage.
McGovern-Dole's Mary Allen visits a WFP warehouse in Bajhang district. The McGovern-Dole Programme provides in-kind donations of agricultural commodities and financial assistance for school feeding and maternal and child nutrition projects in low-income, food-deficit countries like Nepal that are committed to universal education.
The McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Programme (McGovern-Dole) supports development projects that combat hunger, improve nutrition, and strengthen the quality of, and access to, education, with a special emphasis on girls.

For 2012, WFP is planning to reach nearly 210,000 students from 1,800 pre- and primary schools in the food-insecure hill and mountain regions of Nepal.
