Nicaragua: A Showcase of WFP Actions to Protect the Environment

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) participated in the 12th edition of the National Fair in the Port of Corinto, in the Pacific coast of Nicaragua, during World Environment Day. At the WFP stand, visitors learned about WFP’s initiatives that protect the environment, such as Purchase for Progress (P4P), food for assets and food for training.

"WFP joins Nicaraguans’ various initiatives to protect the environment. The sum of all efforts will allow us to foster greater awareness about the environment for our planet," said the WFP official.

Cultural activities, a day of reforestation at the Cardon Island and a discussion about the need for all government institutions and the private sector to implement recycling policies as part of a draft law for an efficient waste management system, took place during the National Earth Fair. To support recycling, WFP is donating discarded paper to the Medical-Pedagogical Institute "The Pipitos" to finance activities aimed at children and youth with disabilities.

With donations from private donors such as TNT and Cargill, WFP implemented micro projects in rural schools of Matagalpa and Nueva Segovia to improve the educational environment for students and teachers. The micro school projects included the construction of Eco-stoves (fuel-efficient stoves), the installation of new sinks to properly wash food before cooking the school meals, the use of filters to purify drinking water, the construction of latrines to avoid contaminating water sources and reforestation.

Nicaragua: Families of Nueva Segovia and Madriz Improve Resilience

Through the Food-for-Assets programme, families in the departments of Nueva Segovia and Madriz improved their resilience to the impact of recurrent natural disasters and climate change in their homes and communities. Participants received training on water and land conservation techniques, the proper use of fertilizers and pesticides and on how to refrain from slash and burn agriculture.

Nicaragua: P4P Promotes Eco-Friendly Technologies

Through the Purchase for Progress (P4P) initiative, WFP, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation and other local partners, smallholder producers of basic grains from nine cooperatives in Nueva Segovia promote low-cost techniques to improve crop quality, reduce losses and prevent environmental degradation. P4P promotes actions as minimum tillage systems that reduce deterioration and soil erosion, the use of seeds adapted to different climatic zones, airtight storage systems for pest control, soil sampling and analysis for a rational use of fertilizers.
