Food and Nutrition Assistance and Building Resilience of Vulnerable Population


WFP Guinea-Bissau assists rural vulnerable groups who face chronic food and nutrition insecurity with the aim to build resilience to future shocks. WFP protracted and Relief activities prioritises efforts to address malnutrition, which remains a major public health challenge in Guinea-Bissau, severely limiting human development. The main causes of malnutrition include poor infant and young child feeding practices, high levels of food insecurity, as well as poor access to health services, clean water, sanitation and hygiene. The PRRO has 3 components: Health & Nutrition, School Feeding and Rural Development.


Nutrition activities will target children under 5 years, pregnant and lactating women, individuals living with HIV under ART and people affected by Tuberculosis under DOTS treatment and their families affected by Food Insecurity.


WFP will also provide food assistance to children through School Feeding activities and implement Rural Development interventions, focusing on protection and enhancement of livelihoods and reinforcing the resilience of the most food insecure communities. Through asset creation and/or rehabilitation, WFP will support the restoration of the rice production infrastructure to improve access to nutritional foods and enhance market opportunities and investments in the agricultural value-chain. It will therefore, contribute towards improving access to basic social services and markets opportunities for communities living in remote areas.


WFP has established a comprehensive Results Based Management (RBM) which aims to reinforce WFP Monitoring & Evaluation capacity and assess the impact on the lives of beneficiaries, and a Food Security Monitoring System to monitor vulnerable population food security situation and make recommendations to policy makers to guide the most critical and appropriate interventions.
