On International Women's Day, WFP held a ceremony in the town of Fatick in central Senegal with women salt producers. Here, WFP Senegal Country Director Inge Breuer with a representative of the salt iodization Economic Interest Group (EIG).
The Australian government has contributed around US$ 28,000 towards the Gender Initiative Fund to support the women salt producers invest in small-scale vegetable farming.
Women of the village Gie de Mbouma collect water from a well for their vegetable gardens. The produce from these gardens includes aubergines, tomatoes and carrots.
In Mbouma village, the headmaster of a school supervises the preparation of school meals. The women will give the food from their gardens to WFP's school meals programme, making the meals more nutritious for the children.
