Fighting Hunger with Cash – Young Sierra Leoneans benefit from first Cash-for-Work programme

In post-conflict Sierra Leone, youth unemployment and poverty is widespread, particularly in urban centres. The European Union funded Cash-for-Work projects engage the most vulnerable youth in short-term projects such as road maintenance, drain clearing, composting, tree-planting and waste management. In exchange for their work, participants receive cash to buy food for their families. Their labour also contributes to local community development.

Overview

Although Sierra Leone has great natural resources, the decade-long civil war severely devastated the country’s economy, destroyed infrastructure and caused large-scale human suffering. In 2008, Sierra Leone ranked 84 out of 88 countries in the Global Hunger Index and last out of 179 countries in the Human Development Index.
