World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

Memory Mutami and her malnourished child Vitalis (19 months), both HIV+, visit a voucher distribution point in the grounds of Parirenyatwa Hosptial in Harare. Memory holds the food voucher that has just been given to her. This entitles her to a month's supply of corn soya blend (CSB) and a household ration of food items to be collected from one of a number of shops in Harare

The CSB Memory gets will make a nourishing porridge for young Vitalis and the rest of the family. The child is receiving anti-retroviral therapy (ART) as part of a government programme

Carrying her CSB ration in a bag and Vitalis on her back, Memory leaves the distribution point in the hospital grounds. She says her son's condition has improved a lot since she started him on the supplementary food mix six months earlier

At the supermarket check-out with items which her voucher entitles her to collect once a month: 10 kgs of mealie meal (maize), 750 ml of veg oil and 1.5Kg of sugar beans for each registered household member

Memory takes Vitalis home in a kombi (minibus) at a cost of US 50 cents. Every expense has to be weighed as her husband no longer has his job as a security guard and their only source of income is from the fruit and vegetables she occasionally sells

Arriving home, Memory is met by her four-year old daughter, Salom. The family shares a house in the Warren Park suburbs of Harare with five other families

Vitalis should be starting to walk by now but his legs are too wasted to support him. However, his health is much better thanks to the combination of CSB porridge and ART
