World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

Souad and her three-year-old son, who is disabled, fled their homes in Deir Ezzor to Al-Hassake city where they are living in an abandoned building without any heat or electricity.

The building where Souad has taken refuge is freezing cold at night. She and her family her surviving on WFP food aid.

“When I happen to come across a mirror which I don’t even have, I look at my face and cannot even recognize who I am anymore," says Souad. "I don’t look like 27.  I don’t feel like 27. My face, body and spirit aged a lot in the last few months. We have all aged.” 

Souad says that she and her family used to have a good life before fleeing their home in Deir Ezzor. But now they have nothing and her husband, who used to have his own bakery, can't find work to support them. 

WFP is scaling up to reach 2.5 million people in Syria, prioritizing people displaced from their homes like Soad.

Conflict in Syria has forced millions of people to flee their homes, creating a humanitarian crisis in which food assistance is a top priority.
