Some of the harvest from WFP’s Karamoja Productive Assets Programme (KPAP) in the north-eastern Karamoja region. Drought-prone Karamoja is Uganda’s poorest, most food insecure region.

The KPAP addresses dependency on relief food. It supports the Uganda Government in providing a way forward for the Karimojong people through the construction of community and household assets such as dams, roads and vegetable gardens.

Households that lack labour capacity get monthly relief assistance from WFP. Those having sufficient labour capacity do not get such assistance but are still encouraged to participate in the KPAP.

Just-harvested sorghum... WFP provides provides agricultural inputs and - during the lean season - cash and cereals for families whose members participate in the KPAP.

Maize dries at a homestead... The KPAP complements other WFP programmes in Karamoja including one that addresses abnormally high stunting rates among children.

A bounty of green gram.... Communities get to choose from assets in categories such as diversification of livelihoods, developing livelihoods infrastructure and conserving the environment. The KPAP, now in its third year, is funded by the governments of the UK, Japan, Norway, Germany and Spain.

Sorting sunflowers.... WFP implements the KPAP through the Uganda Government’s Second Northern Uganda Social Action Fund which aims to reduce the economic disparity between the northern part of the country and elsewhere in Uganda.
