Ambassador Lane greets members of the Jikuzeni Kware SACCOS, supported by WFP's Purchase for Progress initiative. Ambassador Lane traveled with seven international journalists to learn about the work being done by UN food and agricultural agencies in supporting smallholder farmers and agricultural development in Tanzania.
After touring the warehouse rehabilitated through P4P, Ambassador Lane meets the local farmers. Jikuzeni Kware SACCOS has over 600 members, 285 of whom are women. Each member cultivates between 0.5 - 3 hectares of land, primarily sunflowers, maize, and beans.
In Sakila Village, Arumeru, Arusha, food-insecure villagers dug contours along the mountain side to halt erosion and improve water and nutrient absorption into the soil. This project was supported by WFP's Food for Assets in partnership with local NGO CESUDE (Community Empowerment and Sustainable Development).
