In Burkina Faso 21,000 people have been affected by the floods.  Many villages in the Yagha district of the Sahel region are isolated as heavy rains have left roads impassable.  Through a convoy of trucks, donkey-pulled carts and canoes, WFP is reaching more than 8,000 people in the Yagha district.

Trucks transport WFP food assistance as far as road conditions permit.  After the food is unloaded from the trucks, donkey-pulled carts act as an intermediate mode of transportation, carrying the food to flooded areas where it is then loaded into canoes.

The end of September marks the transition from the height of the hunger season to the beginning of the harvest.  Steady rainfall across the region is leading to the growth of crops and pasture and the filling of water points, but there has been extreme flooding in some areas, especially in Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad.

WFP food commodities reach the delivery point and are then distributed to the most vulnerable households.  Ahead of the October harvest, the humanitarian needs are still huge.  WFP and partners are implementing a regional response to reach more than 10 million people with food assistance in eight countries across the Sahel.
