World Food Programme Fighting Hunger Worldwide

Malian refugees line up at the Sag-Nioniogo refugee site about 20 kilometers outside of Burkina Faso’s capital Ouagadougou. Most Malian refugees in Burkina Faso are residing in the Sahel Region in the north. However some have also sought refuge in Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso, the country's second largest city. In this photo refugees' identification cards are verified by the Burkinabé Red Cross before they proceed to collect their monthly WFP food ration. 

The food distribution site pictured is managed by UNHCR. The agency also registers and provides non-food items such as health kits, mats, pots and pans to refugees, while WFP coordinates food distributions. At this distribution site both UNHCR and WFP have partnered with the Burkinabé Red Cross to distribute food and other items to the refugees.

A young boy at the Sag-nioniogo refugee site sits next to bags of rice donated by the United States Government. There are currently some 48,000 Malian refugees registered in Burkina Faso (UNHCR, March 2013).

At the Sag-nioniogo refugee site families receive a monthly ration of rice, beans, oil, salt and a fortified corn soya flour blend. This food makes up a full food basket, ensuring the refugees' food and nutrition needs are met. 

Refugees load their food onto a cart to take back to their tent. Around 2,800 refugees are registered at the Sag-nioniogo site (UNHCR, March 2013). 

Outside the distribution site, beneficiaries stand with their food loaded onto donkey-pulled carts.
