Introducing the Renault Truck Mobile Training Unit

The beginning of a road trip! WFP and Renault Trucks have teamed up to enhance WFP’s fleet capacities in Eastern Africa. WFP mechanics in various countries will learn about advanced truck repair and maintenance from Renault Truck experts. Maintaining WFP’s own fleet of heavy duty and all-terrain trucks helps us deliver life-saving food to the most remote and inaccessible places.

This Renault Kerax 6x6 truck has been outfitted as a mobile training unit. Inside, there is a truck repair workshop, complete with a full Renualt Truck engine for learning and demonstrations.

Nairobi, Kenya: Launching the training

In October 2012, the WFP + Renault Truck training was launched in Nairobi, Kenya, bringing together Logistics and Fleet staff from both organizations.

The first stop on the journey is Kampala, Uganda. Redoine of Renault Trucks is giving a demostration here inside the mobile training unit. As you can see, the mechanics are very attentive! Truck repair is quite complex – both theoretical and practical knowledge is highly important.

Kampala, Uganda: the First WFP Fleet Mechanics Complete the Training

Congratulations! The WFP mechanics have just completed the course in Kampala, and have gathered together to collect their certificates and celebrate their graduation. And yes, that’s a female mechanic! The WFP Fleet Workshop in Kampala defies stereotypes – it is home to a few ladies with a passion for truck repair.

The Road Conditions in South Sudan

The next stop on the journey is Juba, South Sudan. The roads throughout the country are very poor, and many are impassable for a number of months during the rainy season. WFP’s all-terrain trucks here must be well-maintained to push through the mud and make these long journeys. Sometimes drivers are on the road from one to two weeks, and so it is imperative that the trucks are able to handle difficult conditions.

This converted shipping container at the WFP Fleet Workshop in Juba serves as a classroom. With the help of Renault Trucks’ team, WFP mechanics learn how to become more cost and time efficient when maintaining and repairing trucks.

Thirteen Juba Mechanics Celebrate Their Success

Congrats again! These 13 WFP Juba Fleet mechanics have just completed their training. In just a few days, David, a WFP mechanic, learned a lot: “We learned many things, especially on how to maintain and repair the new generation Renault Trucks. It’s also the first time that we have had the opportunity to participate in this type of training. We really appreciate and thank Renault Trucks for making this available to us.”
