Millions of people around the world live on a dollar a day. But what exactly can you buy for a dollar if you go into an average market in Egypt, Cambodia or Guatemala? Follow WFP staff as they go to find out.

Deepesh Das Shresta, WFP Public Information Officer in Nepal, finds out what he can buy for a dollar at a market in his country’s capital.

A Dollar A Day-Cambodia

WFP’s Christopher Rompre spends an hour in one of Phnom Penh’s central food markets, seeing what he can buy for one dollar. He says one in three people in Cambodia lives on a dollar (or 4,000 riel) a day.

A Dollar A Day-Egypt

WFP's Reem Nada spends an hour in one of Cairo's central food markets, seeing what she can buy for one dollar. One US dollar is about six Egyptian pounds, and about 20% of the population live on that amount every day.

A Dollar A Day-Guatemala

Francisco Fion says half of the population in his country, Guatemala, live on less than two dollars a day, or seven quezales. He goes to see what he can buy for this in the central market of San Agustin.
