On the Road: Syria

We're fighting hunger, come with us

From the deserts to Damascus, Abeer takes us to Syria, an enchanting country at grips with a changing climate and the arrival of thousands of refugees from neighbouring Iraq. During a trip to the parched northeast, where whole villages lay abandoned in the wake of drought, Abeer sees how mobile phones and text messages are bringing hope and sustenance to families fleeing from conflict.

Abeer Etefa

Senior Regional Public Information Officer - Cairo

I spent most of my life as a journalist traveling around the Middle East, or studying and teaching about communications. I love playing with all types of cameras except for being in front of them. When I am not in the field listening to the people that WFP helps every day, I am watching TV.

In The Alleys of Damascus

Abeer visits with Iraqi refugees who have fled the sectarian violence in their country for the suburbs of Damascus. Many have since exhausted their savings and now depend on food assistance. While they hope to be able to return soon, WFP expects they will need help for some time to come.

High and Dry

Abeer's trip begins in the parched Al-Shadadi district in northeastern Syria where three years of drought have turned once fertile farmland into desert. Whole villages have been abandonded as people move to the cities in search of work, while hunger and malnutrition hang heavy over the lives of those who remain.
