NGOs

In 2012, WFP partnered with nearly 1,500 NGOs – approximately 87 per cent of which were local NGOs or community-based organisations – in 71 countries and 163 projects. In addition, WFP collaborated with about 40 partners from the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, working together in a total 38 countries and 51 projects. These partners play a critical role in enabling WFP to carry out its work each and every day, and in 2012 distributed nearly 2.3 million metric tons of food aid on behalf of WFP, representing nearly 65 per cent of WFP total food distribution.

Following many decades of intense collaboration with NGOs, it is WFP's vision today to be the "best possible partner". WFP's Strategic Plan (2008-2013) clearly states that "partnerships are essential for WFP in order to accomplish its mission and achieve its objectives". NGOs are described as "instrumental in increasing WFP's global deep field presence" and "essential in both short-term and long-term responses to hunger". Particular emphasis has been given to the importance of national and local communities as key actors on the front line of hunger.

The latest Annual Report on “WFP’s operational relationship with NGOs and National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies” and the handbook “How to work with WFP” can both be found below.

The “How to work with WFP” handbook has been compiled to aid NGO partners in collaborating effectively with WFP. It is intended as a quick reference for all NGO partners engaged with WFP and its activities. The handbook draws on existing WFP policies & guidelines as well as specific samples from WFP country offices.
