Project Laser Beam (PLB) is a five-year, US$50 million public-private partnership that seeks to eradicate child malnutrition. It brings together the expertise of UN agencies with that of Fortune 500 companies, and others in the private sector, to work with local governments and companies to find new solutions to old problems.
Whether refugees are fleeing war, floods are washing away homes or drought is destroying farmland, hunger is often the first emergency. As soon as the local government has requested WFP's help, our emergency response mechanisms go into action. Time saved means lives saved, so our Emergency Preparedness team makes sure WFP is ready to go, anytime. What we need most urgently in an emergency is cash. As funds and food start to flow, WFP's logistics team can work to bridge the gap between donors and the hungry.
A large part of WFP’s work is preventing hunger in the future through programmes that use food as a means to build stronger, food secure communities. Providing food in exchange for work makes it possible for the poor and hungry to devote time and energy to taking the first steps out of the hunger trap. Community members are given food in exchange for work on vital new infrastructure or for time spent learning new skills that will increase the food security of households or communities.
