With 80,000 orphans across the country and 11,000 households run by children, neighbourhood care points are essential in reaching those who have no other way of obtaining food.
WFP delivers food to 365 care points that reach 35,000 children. Community volunteers, who look after the children and prepare their meals, also receive food assistance for their families through WFP’s food-for-work programme.
Catherine Shongwe, a volunteer, says that the care points are very important “it helps the children a lot to come here, when they come from families with no food”.
