Maria Elena says she's learned volumes since joining the Purchase for Progress (P4P) programme in Guatemala, which has allowed her and other women farmers in the community of Polochic to increase the quality and yields of their corn crops. Through the programme, WFP purchases food from small farmers like Maria Elena to use in its food assistance programmes around the country. In the process, it supports them as they learn to become successful, commercial farmers able to provide for themselves by selling food on local markets. Projects like these are the topic of an joint event organized on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly by WFP, UN Women, FAO and IFAD on Accelerating Progress towards the Economic Empowerment of Rural Women.
