“Food assistance will help the poorest families in conflict areas, while at the same time encouraging communities to work together towards lasting peace,” said Valerie Guarnieri, WFP Country Director and Representative to the Philippines.

“This latest Japan donation greatly bolsters WFP efforts to promote peace and reconciliation in Mindanao,” she said.

Conflict

The contribution will provide 2,000 metric tons of nutritionally fortified foods and 120 tons of pulses for people who have been affected by conflict between the Government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

The food assistance will be channeled through WFP-supported activities that promote school attendance, repair damaged infrastructure and provide nutritional support for mothers and children.

WFP had operations in the Philippines from 1965-1996 and resumed its activities this year in support of the peace process in Mindanao.

Programme focus

Working in close cooperation with the Department of Social Welfare and Development and local authorities, the programme is focused in areas where there are large numbers of internally displaced persons and high rates of malnutrition.

This second contribution brings Japan support for WFP in Mindanao to nearly $2.4 million. Globally, Japan has traditionally been one of WFP’s top donors.

This aid package reaffirms the close cooperation between WFP and Japan to build peace and promote human security.
