The Malian pop-duo and world music stars, Amadou & Mariam, are the latest celebrity voices to join the fight against global hunger as the new WFP Ambassadors Against Hunger for the European Union. To raise hunger awareness among Europeans, Amadou & Mariam have dedicated a song to the global hunger challenge.

Labendela is the couple’s newest single and draws on their recent experience in Haiti where they visited WFP projects funded by the European Union. Tne single, and the full version of the accompanying video, will be launched on Monday 27 June during a musical event at Terme di Caracalla in Rome, Italy. Amadou & Mariam will perform a short music set and share some of their experiences as WFP Ambassadors Against Hunger.

While in Haiti the pop duo had the opportunity to meet pregnant and nursing women and their children in the health clinic of Camp l’Aviation, where some 25,000 Haitians displaced after the January 2010 earthquake still live. They also visited projects in Carrefour, one of the worst-hit areas of Port-au-Prince, where a group of women is rebuilding the community with the support of the European Commission and WFP.
