At this year’s DIHAD conference on humanitarian aid, WFP Celebrity Partner Sami Yusuf called on the world’s youth to take the fight against hunger into their hands. The renowned singer-songwriter has been raising funds and awareness for hungry children in the Horn of Africa with his new single “Forgotten Promises”.

CAIRO—At the climax of the 9th annual Dubai International Humanitarian Aid and Development Conference and Exhibition (DIHAD), British singer-songwriter Sami Yusuf encouraged young people to be creative in finding solutions to the world’s problems.

The appearance by the WFP Celebrity Partner was the highlight of this year’s conference, which had the theme of “The Role and Importance of Youth in Humanitarian Assistance and Development.”

“You do not need to be old or rich or in the field to make a difference. You just need to utilize the gifts you have and put them into action,” Yusuf said.

“You don’t need an advertising agency and a media budget to spread your message and mobilize people. Seek knowledge about humanitarian issues like hunger from WFP’s website, share it, and fundraise.”

A major event

A platform for hundreds of regional and international humanitarian actors and organizations to interact and share their experiences in the field, DIHAD provided the perfect forum for Yusuf to deliver his inspirational call to action.

With a special focus on youth at DIHAD this year, Yusuf invited all young people to become direct agents of change as the new generation in humanitarian work.

Acknowledging that the youth are vital stakeholders in humanitarian and development work, he urged them to use their creativity and gifts to initiate creative campaigns and to contribute to humanitarian issues worldwide.

Yusuf’s message was well received by DIHAD attendees. Fans crowded around the singer thanking him for his words of encouragement as he humbly greeted and congratulated them on participating in DIHAD for the benefit of humanity.

Young humanitarian

The renowned international artist is determined to dedicate his fame and gift of music to philanthropic causes and to help WFP raise awareness about hunger worldwide. In the wake of the famine in Somalia and the Horn of Africa, Yusuf released his single “Forgotten Promises” and launched the LiveFeed campaign with WFP.

All proceeds from ‘Forgotten Promises’ go directly to WFP to feed hungry people in Somalia and the Horn of Africa. With each song downloaded and each album purchased, you provide direct food assistance to at least 2 people suffering from hunger.

The LiveFeed campaign has succeeded to generate awareness and mobilize Yusuf’s fans to take action against hunger, many of whom may never have grasped the gravity of the issue of hunger and the situation in the Horn of Africa if it was not through the artist’s words and genuine dedication.
