Where in the World - Horn of Africa

This research activity is part of a geography-themed series: "Where in the World." The activities are designed to be covered over a series of lessons. The end result will be an understanding of hunger issues in a particular country, as well as an understanding that hunger is a global issue which affects countries in all areas of the planet.
In addition, students will gain an understanding of the current situation in the Horn of Africa and learn how WFP is working in that region of the world.
Through research and the application of mapping skills, students will gain an understanding of the problems of hunger and poverty around the world, the strategies being employed to combat the effects of these problems, and the efforts being made to create sustainable solutions.

The Hunger Obstacle Course
Age Range: Grades 7-9

Collaborative Learning and Problem-solving
Hunger affects populations both globally and domestically. Students should be aware of the obstacles to food security and good levels of nutrition that many people face every day. Encouraging students to find solutions to these problems heightens their awareness of the issues, and enables them to realize that members of a community can help each other in concrete ways. This activity engages participants in creative problem solving though a time-limited process of generating solutions to different hunger-related problems. Small groups of students circulate around the room and write down solutions to each of the hunger obstacles.

The Hunger Tree
Age Range: Grades 4-6

This activity uses the image of a tree to help students understand the problem of “hunger” that may seem overwhelming and impossible to change at first. This activity helps young people think through the problem and why it occurs. They also think together about actions that can be taken to help reduce the problem of hunger.

The Millennium Development Goals
Age Range: Grades 7-9

Eradicating hunger, part of the MDG No.1, is the key to development. While people are hungry, all other development activities are thwarted. The hungry can concentrate little other than their next meal. Hungry mothers give birth to hungry children, who, if they live long enough, grow into hungry adults.

This activity will help foster an understanding of hunger in the context of other social issues. After participating in this activity, group members should be able to more effectively speak about the ways in which hunger is connected to other issues in the world which also impact the plight of those in poverty. Using a ball of string and cards that represent these various issues, group members will construct a “web” of connections between the given topics.

Stone Soup
Stone Soup is a traditional folktale found in many parts of the world. In some versions the main character convinces people that they can make soup from a rusty old nail and sometimes it’s an axe which is the chief ingredient! But whether it’s a stone or a nail or an axe, the story helps us to think about our place in the world. This new version of the story was written especially for World Food Day 2008 and focuses on ways that we can help other people.
