Jude from Belgium turned to his peers from around the world to help him make a video raising awareness about hunger. In turn, he discovered the creativity and passion of students like him working to solve hunger – and hope for the future. He wrote this essay to share how the experience inspired him to keep making a difference.
Being a humanitarian entails a lot. It shows how willing you are to put the needs of others before your own and how willing you are to help people. I chose to create a video as my final advocacy project for this online internship because I felt a lot of people would be moved by these diverse students talking about why they’re involved in the fight against hunger. The students who shared their perspective in my film came together from around the world, determined to help solve hunger in any way they can.
The future lies in the hands of young people -- especially students. Thus, this video gives a reason to believe that the future is indeed bright: students are motivated and determined to end hunger.
Creating this video alongside the demands of my studies seemed very challenging at first. However, with encouragement and help from friends and the WFP youth outreach team I began to see it as a real opportunity. When I first introduced the film’s subject of hunger to my friends and classmates, their immediate willingness to help with creative ideas made the video one of a kind. We then went a step further when our nutrition professor gave a special lecture on hunger, malnutrition, and the work of WFP. It was an incredibly insightful lecture, teaching us about the causes, symptoms and effects of hunger – as well as how individuals and organisations are working to solve it.
Creating this video showed me how educated and enlightened students can be on the problem of hunger in the world. In the statements and short videos fellow students made, I also saw how innovative, creative and artful they are.
This project has paved the way for the creation of networks of young people around the world working to raise awareness about hunger and ways to solve it. Many people have already joined the cause by liking the WFP Students page on Facebook.
Above all, I have learned that no matter who you are, you can be a humanitarian in your own small way. Always remember to smile when giving a helping hand and you can bring a smile to the face of another.
You can watch the video I made here.
