South Sudan WFP Airdrops and Airlifts Reach People in Cut-off Areas as Hunger Increases (For the Media)

A WFP emergency response team has been in Haat as part joint rapid response mechanism to hard-to-reach areas with UNICEF and other partners. They registered over 6,000 people, including several IDPs who have fled fighting in neighbouring Unity State. The food commodities – cereals, pulses, vegetable oil and nutrition products were delivered by air through airdrops and airlifts.  As the peace talks have been unsuccessful and the rainy season starts, fighting intensified in Upper Nile and Unity states since April. Over 2 million people are currently either internally displaced or sought refuge in neighbouring countries. More than 120,000 are sheltered in UN compounds, the highest level since the start of the conflict in December 2013.
