WFP Distributing Food in Worst Affected Areas of Haiti (For the Media)

In its rampage through the Caribbean, Hurricane Matthew claimed lives, and left extensive flooding and mudslides, damage to roads and buildings, and electricity and water shortages in parts of Haiti and Cuba. Despite difficulties in reaching stricken areas due to road damage, initial food distributions started in Haiti this past weekend in the two most affected departments (South and Grande-Anse). Some 8,500 people were provided with food rations from WFP. In coordination with the Government of Haiti and international agencies, WFP has deployed logistics and assessment teams to bring relief and determine the wider impact on food and nutrition security. Ahead of the hurricane season, WFP had pre-positioned sufficient emergency supplies to feed up to 300,000 people for a month.
