In 2010 WFP aims to deliver food assistance to 90 million people in 73 countries.
In 2008, we provided food for 102.1 million people in 78 countries. Here's the breakdown:
People
The hungry people reached in 2008 included:
- 62.3 million people in emergency and relief operations
- 17.6 million people in development projects
- 62.2 million children (including 20.5 million children through school meals projects)
- 9.5 million internally displaced persons (IDPs)
- 1.9 million refugees
- 2.4 million people affected by HIV/AIDS
Food
Food delivered to the hungry totaled 3.9 million metric tons.
- 1.1 million tons came through in-kind donations
- 2.8 million tons was purchased with cash
- US$1.4 billion was spent buying food
- US$1.1 billion spent buying food in 73 developing countries
- 75.6 percent of food was purchased developing countries
Expenditure
- Total expenditure was US$3.72 billion.
- Some 93 percent of WFP funding goes either to cover food costs or to pay for its transport
- WFP employed 10,200 people in 2008 (91 percent of staff serve in the field)
