I can think of no better moment to examine the relationship between philanthropy and the media. Television and newspaper images of the suffering in New Orleans have elicited a global response in just over one week. I was struck by the contrast with another major natural disaster earlier this summer, in Niger, where we have seen one of the world’s clearest case studies of the "CNN effect".
