Assessment findings revealed an alarming food-insecure situation in the region due to the poor performance of rain and the failure of maize production. Inaccessibility remains a major challenge to provide assistance as Trigol area is accessible only by boat, however, this option is not feasible due to prevailing security concerns.
According to authorities, the current security situation on the Ethiopian side has reportedly improved. An urgent intervention is reportedly needed for 84,000 beneficiaries identified by a recent joint rapid assessment mission undertaken by WFP in July 2009. WFP has food allocated to Akobo stored in Wanthwa, however it was not possible to move it to Trigol.
