Nigeria - Special Focus: The Nigerian economy in turmoil what does it mean for food insecurity in the conflict-affected states of the north-east? July 2016

The drop of the oil price in the third quarter of 2014 and the consequent slowdown of the Nigerian economy has posed major challenges for public finances. Policy decisions and the disruption of the oil production due to the recent surge in terrorist activities in the Niger Delta are exacerbating the crisis. This study investigates how the struggle of the Nigerian economy may affect food security in conflicted-affected areas of the north-east.

The simulations show that the number of food insecure people in the north-east may more than double till September 2016. The implementation of social safety nets could however off-set this increase and even halve the number of food insecure people number by December 2016, potentially to 1.9 million.
