Continuous violence and conflict in northern Mali have resulted in a degradation of the humanitarian situation and large-scale displacement. As a result of the vast distances in Mali, poor road conditions during the rainy season as well as the security situation, air travel plays a critical role in allowing humanitarian access to beneficiary populations. There are currently no commercial air operators in the country to transport aid workers to remote project sites. Therefore, the UNHAS operation serves the internal travel needs of the humanitarian community and directly facilitates implementation and monitoring of relief activities.
Currently, UNHAS Mali is providing crucial access to at least seven regular destinations utilizing a fleet of two fixed-wing aircraft. On a monthly basis, UNHAS transports more than 1,350 passengers and 4 mt of cargo.
