Every day 1,000 Somalis stream across the Kenyan border to Dadaab, which is full to bursting with 367,000 people and already constitutes the largest refugee settlement in the world. (..) Would that other donors gave as much, even if that sum may only fund the World Food Programme operation in the country until September.

Food and relief agencies are appealing to the international community to provide political and financial support to combat a devastating drought gripping five countries in the Horn of Africa. The Rome-based U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization and World Food Program and the Oxfam aid organization issued a joint appeal Friday for assistance in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Uganda.

The lives of half a million children in the Horn of Africa are at risk, international aid agencies said on Friday, as the worst drought in decades forces thousands of people to flee their homes each day. (..) In Ethiopia, the WFP anticipates 3.5 million people will be hit by the drought and anticipates an equal number of people to have been affected in Kenya by August.

The US-funded famine early warning system, set up in the wake of the 1984-5 crisis in Ethiopia and aimed at preventing drought and conflict from causing starvation, has been sounding the alarm for months. (..) The World Food Programme said on Friday it needed $477m to see it through a crisis affecting up to 10m people.

World Vision is among leading UK aid agencies launching a joint appeal to help more than 10 million people in the grip of East Africa’s worst drought in over half a century. (..) The UK has taken a lead among the world’s governments with a pledge of £38m to the World Food Programme of the UN, which will provide the food aid that many of the DEC’s members will be distributing.
