Ebola Crisis: WFP Humanitarian Flight To Guinea Departs From UNHRD Base In Brindisi

BRINDISI – A flight carrying humanitarian supplies to support the Ebola response departed for Guinea this morning from the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) in Brindisi.

The aircraft was carrying much-needed supplies for the United Nations World Food Programme’s (WFP) emergency response to the Ebola crisis, including prefabricated structures, generators, tents and other equipment.

The items will help WFP to build Ebola treatment centres for people affected by the virus, and will provide vital logistics support to the work of WFP and other humanitarian organizations, in support of affected communities.

The flight, carrying 58 metric tons of material worth US$412,000 is expected to arrive later this afternoon in Guinea.

Since the beginning of the emergency response to the Ebola crisis, a total of 829 metric tons of materials has been dispatched from the network of UNHRD bases (Brindisi, Dubai, Las Palmas and Accra) on behalf of the humanitarian community. As well as for WFP, supplies have also been sent on behalf of Irish Aid, WHO, UNHCR, Swiss Red Cross and the Japanese cooperation agency, JICA.

Brindisi has already dispatched WFP cargo on charter aircrafts to the 3 Ebola affected countries:  to Guinea on 4 November, to Liberia on 15 October and to Sierra Leone on 5 November.

UNHRD and WFP work closely with the UN Mission for the Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) and hosts its headquarters in one of the network’s bases in Accra, Ghana.
