Japan Contributes $4.2million To Support Refugees In Kenya
“Providing food assistance to more than half a million refugees is a considerable task and we are very pleased to be able to support the World Food Programme in this important endeavour,” said His Excellency Tatsushi Terada, Japanese Ambassador to Kenya. “In order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, the international community needs to put our collective efforts to protect and empower individuals on the ground, and Japan is committed to that end,” he said.
With about half a million refugees in both Dadaab and Kakuma, Kenya hosts one of the largest refugee populations in the world, and they depend on WFP for their food needs. Every two weeks, the refugees are provided with a general food ration comprising of cereals, pulses, vegetable oil, corn soya blend (CSB) and salt which provide 2,178 kilo calories per person per day.
“We welcome the contribution by the Government of Japan which has come at a time when WFP is supporting a rapidly growing number of South Sudanese refugees,” said Ronald Sibanda, WFP’s Kenya Country Director. “Since the outbreak of the conflict in mid-December last year, Kakuma has received 30,000 new arrivals at an average of 300 refugees daily, mostly women and children. We are particularly concerned over reports of high rates of undernutrition among children arriving at the camps,” he said.
In addition to the general ration, WFP also provides specialised fortified foods to children below the age of two years, as well as pregnant women and nursing mothers, to stave off malnutrition. Primary and pre-primary schoolchildren also receive porridge at mid-day, which helps them concentrate on their classes and acts as an incentive to their families to send them to school.
